Welcome Back to School! Here's What's New in Huron Valley

As summer comes to a close many families in White Lake are preparing their kids for the upcoming school year. If your child attends school in the Huron Valley School District there are a few changes you should know about before the first day of school on Sept. 6:

• Highland Middle School has . The Huron Valley Schools Board of Education made the decision earlier this year. If your child was attending the school, they will now attend one of the district's other three middle schools: , Oak Valley or Muir.

• School start times have changed. To see start and dismissal times for your child's school . Note that start and dismissal times for Harbor High School remain the same as the previous year.
• lost principal Bob Behnke to Northville schools at the end of the 2010-2011 school year. The district has appointed former White Lake Middle School .
• To fill the vacancy left by Gmelin's appointment to Lakeland, the district has picked former Lakeland as the new White Lake Middle School Principal. The district is now looking to find a replacement for the assistant principal position at the high school. 
• The district has a new school board president. was elected by his fellow board members to the position in June.

School year calendar for 2011-2012

On early release days, students will attend school for four hours with the day beginning at their regularly scheduled time. At the middle school and high school level, students attend all six periods but in a condensed format with no lunch period. At the elementary school level, the four-hour day includes lunch:

• Nov. 8 Election Day/ Professional Development/No School for Students
• Nov. 23-25 No Schools in Session/Thanksgiving Holiday
• Dec. 9 Early Release/Professional Development (AM only for students)
• Dec. 19-Jan 2 No Schools in Session/Winter Holiday (December 16 is last day of School)
• Jan. 3 School Resumes/All Schools in Session
• Jan. 16 No Schools in Session/Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
• Jan. 27 Early Release/Professional Development (AM only for students)
• Feb 20 No Schools in Session
• March 6 Professional Development/No School for Students
• April 2-6 No Schools in Session/Spring Holiday
• April 9 School Resumes
• April 25 Early Release/Professional Development (AM only for students)
• May 28 No Schools in Session/Memorial Day Holiday
• June 8 Last Day Students/Staff
