Cleary University Signs Lakeland High School Golfer

Maria Brooks signed with Cleary University on April 20 and will join the women's golf team.

Cleary University is proud to welcome its newest Cougar! Lakeland High School senior Maria Brooks signed her letter of intent to play on the university’s women’s golf team Friday, April 20.

Brooks, whose list of accolades is extensive, is one of the first members of Cleary University’s women’s golf team.

Brooks has been named MVP of Lakeland’s women’s golf team for the past two years and was a nine-time medalist for the 2011 golf team. She placed 11th in the 2011 Oakland County Division 2 Golf Tournament, has lettered five times in golf and softball, and was named the 2011 Huron Valley Outstanding Youth Citizen for her volunteer service to Huron Valley Sinai Hospital.

“I’m thrilled to have Maria on board,” said Cleary University’s Women’s Golf Coach Bob Fillipps. “Her skill level and dedication to the sport is impressive and I know she’ll be a real asset to the team.”

Historically, Cleary University offered athletics including basketball, baseball, and football, but the last record of an athletics program was back in the mid 1960s. The university resurrected its athletics program in August of 2011 and currently has a men’s and women’s golf program, as well as men’s and women’s cross country teams. The athletics program will be expanding in 2013 with the addition of men’s and women’s soccer.
