Heron Days at Kensington

See majestic great blue herons on their nests at “Heron Days,” scheduled Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Nature Center of Kensington Metropark near Milford/Brighton.

Visitors can observe the great blue herons at the rookery through spotting scopes on the 800-foot boardwalk on Wildwing Lake. The birds are typically taking care of their young, and may be seen flying to and from their nests. Then, stop by the Nature Center to giggle at Rosco the Clown’s antics, or buy native plants from Wildtype Nursery of Mason, MI. Also, check out the live insects on display, and stop by the book sale.

Representatives from Six Rivers Regional Land Conservancy, Livingston Land Conservancy, Sierra Club, Wildernest, Friends of the Detroit River, and The Michigan Archeology Society will be on hand to meet visitors and answer questions regarding their organizations.

An Ohio State University crew who studies Emerald Ash Borers in the Nature Area will discuss the next threat – Asian long-horned beetles, and where we stand with the Ash Borers now.

Heavner’s Canoe Livery will promote its No child Left Inside programs, and photographer Ted Nelson will be selling copies of his book, Nature of Kensington.

For more information on Heron Days at Kensington Metropark, call the Nature Center at 800-477-3178 or 248-685-0603.
