Milford Criterium 2011 Michigan State Championships

On July 31, DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital presents the Milford Criterium and hosts the Michigan State Criterium Championships.

It's the first time in more than 30 years since Milford hosted championship road events at the General Motors Proving Grounds.

Building on the successes of the previous two years, the 2011 edition of the Milford Criterium is expected to provide "the complete race experience" as well as a purse of more than $5,630, including prizes and primes.

A criterium, commonly referred to as a "crit," is a short, multi-lap, closed circuit road cycling race traditionally held in an urban setting with its roots in Europe.

In this instance, the race incorporates a Main Street start and finish and includes some wicked turns in and through Central Park within the Village of Milford. This affords spectators the opportunity to see the racers' each lap and observe the exciting action as it unfolds.

The course, selected for safety of both riders and spectators , is .92 miles in length with the start/finish at the paver crosswalk right on Main Street; it heads north on Main Street, then makes its first left onto Commerce Road heading west. At Cabinet Street, it makes a second left heading south, going left again onto West Liberty past the historic power house. Finally, it turns right into the rear entrance of Central Park, winding through the park and into a hairpin turn back onto Main Street for an uphill sprint to finish.

Registration's at 7 a.m. and races start at 8 a.m. See www.milfordcrit.org for a full race schedule.

Bring the kids, their bikes and helmets for the 2:15 p.m. kids' fun race, which is free!

A healthy lifestyles expo will take place in the CarQuest parking lot on Main Street.

Parking is suggested at either Muir Middle School or Baker Elementary School; both buildings are within an easy walking distance.
