Huron Valley Extends Season with Fall Baseball League

HVYBSL teams will play from Aug. 20-Sept. 25 at sites throughout the area, including Duck Lake Road and Milford High School.

After the conclusion of the spring and early summer Huron Valley Baseball & Softball League (HVYBSL) season, the demand for more baseball will mean the start of a fall baseball season beginning Aug. 20 and running through Sept. 25.

At least one team from Huron Valley is expected to compete in each age group from 8U (8 and older) to 14U (14 and older), said Ed Lankford, HVYBSL vice president and next year’s president.

Games will be played at fields throughout the area, including at Huron Valley's Duck Lake Pines on Duck Lake Road just south of Highland Road, Livonia's Ford and Bicentennial Parks, Farmington's Founders Park, Catholic Central High School in Novi, Milford High School and Madonna University in Livonia.

Teams from various communities will compete, and the number of teams could grow if demand rises, Lankford said.

“Last (late summer and early fall), we had a combined league with a local baseball clinic, but this year, we wanted to have a more organized and controlled fall league,” he said.

The demand for such a league has grown through the years, especially since the HVYBSL’s regular season ends in late June. That two-month league culminates just at a point when many players are beginning to significantly improve their games. This year’s spring/summer league comprised 17 softball teams, approximately 50 baseball teams and about 25 T-ball and developmental league teams for younger players starting as early as age 4.

“We do have Huron Valley travel teams who will play into July, but this second league gives our other players a chance to continue getting better and working on their fundamentals,” Lankford said. It’s about getting better and having fun.”

The five-week league is an excellent way to play more games, experience different positions, work on mechanics and play on some very nice fields, including high school varsity fields. Many of the children who play baseball want to play more throughout the year.

The fall league will be set up so that players can compete in other fall sports such as football, although there may be some conflicts.

If the added fall baseball league grows in popularity, the HVYBSL might consider starting a fall fast-pitch softball league as well, Lankford said.

HVYBSL’s spring and summer regular season ended June 25 with all-star games at all levels and championship games for 10U, 12U and 14U teams.

“We’re all volunteers in trying to run this league, so we appreciate all the support from our parents who make it possible,” Lankford said. “I think we have had a very successful year so far.”
