Huron Valley Wrestlers Compete at State Championships

Lakeland's Brandon Calma and Milford's Steve Shay both competed at the Palace over the weekend for the Michigan High School Athletics Association's wrestling state finals meet.

Lakeland’s Brandon Calma and Milford’s Steve Shay wrapped up their outstanding wrestling careers by competing in the state wrestling championships at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Calma brought a sterling 30-8 season record to the Palace in the 112 pound weight class while Steve brought in a sparkling 33-15 record in the 130 pound division. Both seniors were among the top 16 wrestlers in the state entering the championships.

Eagle senior Calma entered his first match Thursday afternoon against Tayron Wromble from Romeo. The first period went back and forth as both wrestlers got the feel of the pressure packed action at the Palace. Calma fought hard in the second period keeping the match close heading into the final two minutes. He just came up short as he was pinned with just 39 seconds left in the match. 

Maverick senior Shay went against Mike Willits from Oxford in his first match Thursday afternoon. Shay held his own in the first period before falling behind in the second. He could not recover and dropped the match 13-1.

Wrestling in the consolation round Friday morning, Shay came back with a big win over C.J. Brish from Brighton. After a seesaw battle for the first two periods, Shay pinned Brish at the 1:15 mark of the third period for the exciting win. Late Friday afternoon, Shay went up against Evan Richardson from Romeo in his third match. He dropped a heart stopping match by the score of 7-5.

Calma also came back Friday morning wrestling in the consolation round going up against Alex Bualteng from Battle Creek Lakeview. The match went back and forth with both kids leaving it all on the mat. The Lakeland senior wrestled his heart for the Eagles before losing a heartbreaker 7-5.

Lakeland’s Calma wrapped up an outstanding wrestling career at Lakeland by winning 30 out of his 40 matches his senior year. Milford’s Shay capped his outstanding senior year by winning one match in the state championships on his way to winning 34 times for the Mavericks.
