Lakeland Claims First Regional Title Since 1981

The Lakeland Eagles hockey team clinched the regional title with an overtime win over Waterford Mott.

The following was submitted to White Lake Patch by Pat Kalinowski.

Kyle Jakubowski scored the game winning goal 1:47 in overtime, banging in a rebound off of a Bobby Schumacher shot from the point to send Lakeland to the elite eight of the state tournament.

After a scoreless first period it was Mott's Tyler Vaughan who opened the scoring in the second period after he went end to end and beat Eagles goalie Mitch Leist at the 11:38 mark of the second period.

Lakeland's Kevin Lechner answered for the Eagles when he sniped Mott goalie John Furton with 8:57 left to play in the second period.

The Eagles came out in the third and peppered Furton with 22 shots while Mott could only manage two shots on Leist.

After 45 minutes of regulation play the Regional Final would be decided in overtime where Jakubowski and the Eagles would advance to the Division 2 State Quarter Finals.

Lakeland out shot Mott 45-23.

Lakeland plays Brother Rice Tuesday night at Novi Arena, the puck drops at 6:30 p.m.
