Lakeland Sweeps Milford to Win District Volleyball Championship

Eagles advance to regional play in Brighton on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

The volleyball team swept district rival Milford to win the district championship. 

The first game was a classic as both teams were outstanding. The game was tied 21-21 which set the stage for a frantic finish as Eagles pulled off the win 32-30. 

Milford took charge in the second game jumping out to an 18-13 lead. After a Lakeland timeout, the Eagles went on 11-5 run for a 24-23 lead.  The Mavericks got a key point to narrow the lead to 24-23. Junior Shanna Gitre had the game winning serve for the Eagles as they won 26-24.

In the final game, Lakeland stormed out to a 15-5 lead. After a Maverick timeout, the Eagles went on a 10-6 run to win 25-11 to clinch their third district championship in a row.

When asked what the key to the match was, Coach Cottrill said “Coming back in the second game. Being down 18-10, staying composed and coming back and winning that game two.”

Senior Ciara Schultz lead the way for the Eagles with 39 assists, 18 digs, 10 kills and 3 aces. Lindsey Hansard had a great night with 30 digs followed by Mary Armstrong with 13 kills. 

With the win, the Eagles advance to the regionals at Brighton High School where they will take on Canton at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
