Three will advance to Regional competition on Feb. 19.

The following was submitted by wrestling parent Lori Sokoll.

Those who know, claim it is the toughest sport around. They say it takes a dedication unlike any other sport. One of the original Olympic sports, it is simply man against man. Those who do it know what it takes. One match at a time, the goal is to win, to advance.

Last Saturday, Walled Lake Central hosted the MHSSA 2011 Individual District Championships. The top four wrestlers in each weight class earn the privilege of advancing to the regional tournament to be held on Feb. 19 at L'Anse Creuse High School.

After a day of grueling competition, with many surprises along the way, Lakeland sent three wrestlers to the podium. Brandon Calma, at 112 pounds placed third and Kyle Babin, 125 pounds, took fourth. Senior captain, Alex Sokoll, won a 9-5 decision over North Farmington's Courtney Drew in the 215 pound finals earning him the title of District Champion.

With the hiring of coach Matt Bishop in 2009 the wrestling program at Lakeland continues to improve, gaining a new respect along the way. As a highly decorated wrestler himself, Bishop brings a level of knowledge and experience that has proven invaluable. Wrestling is his passion, and coaching is his joy.

From the beginning, Bishop told his squad that they would be expected to work hard, but he would be right there with them. When asked how he feels about his coach Sokoll replied, "Coach Bishop has made a huge difference in our program and I'm so thankful to have had the opportunity to be coached by him. As a senior I will take great memories of the team and coach with me. I credit Coach Bishop for my having had such a successful season. I can only imagine what the future holds for Lakeland Wrestling with Bishop at the helm."
