Milford Wrestlers Win 38-38 After Tiebreaker

Mavericks beat Eagles, breaking the tie by winning the tiebreaker.

In the annual showdown between the Milford and Lakeland wrestling teams Thursday evening, the match ended in a 38-38 tie. By rule, Milford was declared the winner by going to the 7th tiebreaker criteria which is the team who had the most first take-downs. Milford had 7 and Lakeland had 5 so the win goes to the Mavericks.

Lakeland jumped out to a quick lead as Shane Gustinis at 160 and Chase Kelley at 171 won their matches. The Mavericks stormed back as John Ernst at 189 won by a pin and Noah Hosking at 215 took a 11-2 win. The match was back and forth all evening as both squads wrestled their hearts out.

Lakeland’s Jon Coate pinned Zack Blagg to give the Eagles a 38-26 lead with 2 matches left. At 145, Milford’s Luke Rea pinned Mike Maher to trim the Eagles lead to 38-32 heading into the final match. In the last match of the evening at 152, Milford’s Ryan Grubb pinned Donovan Carter with just 31 seconds left in the third period to tie the score at 38-38.

With the win, the Mavericks up their record to 5-2 while the Eagles record drops to 2-4.
