There's More to Quake on the Lake than Hydroplanes

Family activities, a car show, food and drinks and musical guests highlight the action at Pontiac Lake.

There is a lot to like about Quake on the Lake, the annual hydroplane races that take place July 16 and 17 at the Pontiac Lake Recreation Area in White Lake and Waterford townships.

Certainly the hydroplane boats with speeds up to 170 mph are the main attraction. are another reason. And summer weather in July needs no explanation.

But there are plenty of other activities that attract guests of all ages. One is the ability to visit race pits and perhaps even meet some of the drivers and their crews with the hydroplanes. If you do plan to visit the race pits though, be sure to wear closed-toed shoes because it is a hot area.

This year’s Quake will feature the 2011 APBA National Championships on the water and as well as headlining the stage including Rare Earth, The Verve Pipe, The Detroit Groove Kings and The Infatuations as well as many others. It is the third year that Quake is bringing in musical groups to help supplement entertainment options.

“We’ve tried to attract bands and musical groups that will appear to a wide range of fans,” said Quake on the Lake Chairman Dale Hampshire.

Of course at Pontiac Lake the beach is always an attraction. And guests are invited to bring their law chairs, blankets and umbrellas. Don’t forget the sunscreen, binoculars and cameras, say organizers. However alcohol and all types of glass are prohibited and will not be allowed within the grounds.

While all the thrills, spills and chills of hydroplane boat racing are taking place on the water, the entire family can also enjoy loads of summertime on the land at the "Family Fun Zone." There the kids can enjoy games, arts and crafts, bounce houses and other types of safe, physical activities.

A car show is onsite so that gearheads can get their thrills not just watching the hydroplane races but checking out their favorite race cars, trucks and classic cars.

“I think one of the reasons the event has been so successful here is that we like speed,” Hampshire said. “We like our engines and our vehicles. We like spending time outside and boating in our inland lakes. This event really speaks to the culture in this area.”

And don’t forget the food and concession stands. From hot dogs and hamburgers to specialty items like almonds and cool drinks to beat the heat, there will be no shortage of items to tempt your palette.

Nearby, fans can tour the latest in new vehicle and ski boat displays, including the Flaming Pistons Car Club that showcases a wide range of classic cars, hot rods and high performance race cars. And there will be a silent auction comprised of gifts, sports collectibles, vacation activities and more that help to raise money for The Rainbow Connection and other community organizations.

“We purposely have tried to add many events to Quake over the years so that it appeals to the whole family,” Hampshire said. “The goal is to have activities that interest every age group.”
