Maximizing your food budget

Are you tired of walking out of the grocery store with only five bags after spending $100?  Several years ago, my wife and I decided I would be the one to do the grocery shopping. I admit grocery shopping is not typically a guy thing.  Then again, I am not your typical guy, so it all worked out.

My wife is the type of person that will go to one store and buy everything. I, on the other hand, will hunt for the best deal and then buy as many as I can using my coupons, bottle refunds and store shopping card to get my total as low as possible.

Maximizing our food budget was a necessity for us.  For about eight years, my wife and I were foster parents. We had three children of our own and four foster children. Our food budget was set in stone at $500 a month and I consistently came in under budget, even with two teenage boys that could eat more than a rhinoceros.

Here are a few things you can do to maximize your food budget. First, eliminate the desire to eat out by planning your meals using a monthly menu. Next, accept the fact that using coupons will save you money. You can even start a coupon swap at work.  Everyone buys different stuff, so you will be surprised how many extra coupons you can get this way. You will need to clip and organize coupons weekly, so that you can combine them with store sales whenever possible.
