Christmas in Action Raising Money for Projects

Come to the Shark Club in Waterford Wednesday to help a good cause.

Christmas in Action Oakland County is looking for volunteers to help raise money and complete its upcoming projects.

Norma Okonski, the administrator for Christmas in Action, said the nonprofit group needs two people per shift to work the cash/chip table for the Texas Hold 'Em Tournaments held at the Shark Club in Waterford.

The fundraisers, all from 6:30 p.m.-closing, will be held:

Christmas in Action completes free home repairs for low-income senior homeowners.

"Since 1973, community volunteers come together the last Saturday each April to aid our seniors and provide the free home repairs so they can remain safe, warm and independent in their own homes," Okonski said.

"The money we raise will help us purchase materials for roofs, ramps and construction materials for our workday on Saturday, April 28," she said.

"We've had great feedback and unbelievable gratefulness and joy at having a ramp to restore independence," Okonski said of the group's work. "A working furnace or hot water for the first time in several years — these are basic necessities that you and I take for granted; sadly, seniors learn to do without."

Anyone 12 or older can help. Okonski said the group has had volunteers of all ages, including an 87-year-old. "We welcome all."

"Whether it is a new furnace, building a ramp, painting, plumbing repairs — you name it, we’ve done it," she said. "But volunteers are needed throughout the year to make this logistical miracle happen. We encourage people to call us if they would like to get more involved. We would love to have you."

To get involved, sign up online at ciaoaklandcounty.org or call 248-618-7433. You can also recommend low-income seniors who need help for the workday projects.
