Patch Picks: Great Nonprofits

These are a few of the organizations making a difference in, and around, our community.

There are several nonprofits in, and around, White Lake that focus on making our community a better place. Wether you are into preserving local history, or helping those in need, here are a five we think you should know about. 1. Friends of Highland Recreation Area - This organization works tirelessly each year to continue to preserve and restore the historic Haven Hill properties located within Highland Recreation Area in White Lake. They've made incredible progress in improving the formerly dilapadated buildings and grounds, but they are always looking for help. They have big plans for the area and hope to turn it into a destination for tourist to come and learn about the Edsel Ford Family. Haven Hill is a diamond in the rough, and this group is working hard to make it a gem in the community.

2. - For seniors and residents who are homebound and in need of food, Meals on Wheels in White Lake is a savior. Volunteers make these meals at the and distribute them to residents all across the township. The organization could use your help. To enroll in the program, or become a volunteer driver call 888-886-8971.

3. Huron Valley Optimist Club - The Optimists provide a number services to the community and children in the Huron Valley School District. Not only do they help each Christmas season with Shop with a Cop, but they donate books to elementary students, raise money for children suffering from cancer, make magic hug squares to comfort kids at Huron Valley Hospital and give back to the community through mentoring programs.

4. - The volunteers and veterans of VFW Post 4156 are an invaluable part of the community. They host holiday dinners for those in need, hold canned food drives, and help the less fortunate residents in White Lake. They also provide an incredible outpooring of support and love for veterans, young and old, who have served our country.

5. Open Door Outreach Center - Located just outside White Lake, Open Door Outreach Center provides a food pantry, crisis funding, a resale store and programs for those in need. The center is always looking for donations and includes a wish list on its site. Items on the wish list include bar soap, shampoo, diapers, toilet paper, gift cards for Meijer or Kroger, and financial donations. To donate or get involved check out their website.
