Do You Agree With the Actions of the Walled Lake School District and Bus Drivers?

On Wednesday, classes were canceled in the Walled Lake Consolidated School District after bus drivers called in sick.

Nearly one-quarter of the Walled Lake School District's bus drivers called in sick Wednesday morning, leading the district to cancel classes. WWJ-AM reports that the move is "an apparent protest" over the district's decision to outsource busing. District spokesperson Judy Evola told WWJ the district will be "strategizing today. If this does occur again, we will have a plan in place that we will communicate with our parents,” she said. Superintendent Kenneth Gutman told WJBK-TV that school will go on Thursday, no matter what. Parents expressed their frustrations with the district on the White Lake-Highland Patch and West Bloomfield Patch Facebook pages. "This is what happens when you outsource busing to a private company, and folks who have…

Letter to the Editor: 'Thanks for the Memories at HMS'

Former Highland Middle School staff member Mike MacGregor thanks school board for helping to sponsor the reunion photo event last week.

Dear Editor, The temperature was about 20. A cold wind was blowing out of the north at 15 miles per hour. For those who turned out for one last photo together at Highland Middle School last Friday, the frigid weather was viewed as just another typical early March day and would not be an obstacle to coming together one last time to mark the passing of Huron Valley’s most venerable school. Most citizens know that Huron Valley’s history goes directly through Highland Township School. Built in 1936, added onto in 1938, 1953 and again in 1964, it gave way to Highland Junior High in the 1960’s and then finally Highland Middle School in the 1970’s. We all know that in a few short weeks, our school will be lost to the wrecking ball and be gone …

Well done Mike and I was honored to be able to coach at HMS for four years and to be the last track and girls basketball coach and to be able to finish what others before me started is an honor that I will always remember. What a great building with so many memories for so many. I was glad that all three of my kids went there and were able to make it for the picture on Friday.   more ›

Editors Nicole Krawcke and Tatum Ryan will join Brooke Tajer in writing about our towns.

After serving for more than two years as the editor of White Lake Patch, which added Highland to its coverage area last year, I am happy to announce that I am taking on a new role at Patch -- one that will encourage readers to take more control over the site, posting stories, events and announcements that are important to you. My new role will be more of a regional one, working with eight other sites in Oakland, Livingston, Wayne and Washtenaw counties, in addition to White Lake-Highland Patch. You'll still see my name and face on the site, and on Facebook and Twitter. And of course, you will still see me around town in person -- White Lake is my hometown, after all.
