Univeristy of Michigan football player and Lakeland High School alumni Steve Wilson was recognized this week as one the inaugural recipients of a postgraduate Big Ten scholarship. Wilson, along with women's swimmer Val Barthelemy, of Ann Arbor, were selected as the University of Michigan recipients by a committee of faculty and staff from the institution, according to mgoblue.com. The meet will be held at Lakeland High School.
The Oakland County Special Olympics Track & Field meet will be held at Lakeland High School on May 4. More than 500 athletes will be participating, and volunteers are still needed to help on the day of the event. Those interested in volunteering must sign up no later than April 27. If you are interested in volunteering, you can sign up online. All volunteers will be asked to attend a coordination meeting to explain the events of the day and to provide background in regards to the athletes. Running Fit is uniting Michigan runners to show their support for Boston.
To celebrate the safe return of Boston Marathon runners and to show solidarity for Boston, Running Fit will be hosting a "Runners For Boston" run/walk this week. The unity 4.15 mile run/walk will be held on Wednesday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m.at Kensington Metropark, and participants should meet at the East Boat Launch. On the Running Fit website, Randy Step writes that running has taken on a new meaning for runners after the April 15 bombings. "Every step feels like a dedication to those who suffered. Just heading out the door is like thumbing our nose at terrorists that are out to change our way of life and limit our freedoms," he writes on the website. The competition to win the state title begins at 2 p.m.
The Huron Valley high school girls gymnastics team will compete in the team state finals Friday at Canton High School. The competition begins at 2 p.m., and you can see the team's rotation schedules for the beam, vault, floor and bars at the MHSAA website. According to the MHSAA, Highland-Milford qualified for the state competition by placing third at its regional competition on March 2 with a score of 138.850. The other 12 teams competing for the state title are Grand Ledge, Rockford, Forest Hills, Freeland, Haslett, Livonia Red, Farmington, Brighton, Birmingham, Canton High School, Plymouth High School and Salem High School. Milford High School's Noah Hosking finished in sixth place at the 2013 MHSAA Wrestling State Finals.

Hannah Hosking sang the National Anthem while her brother third ranked Noah Hosking wrestled in the MHSAA Wrestling Individual State Finals. The pride went both ways as Noah was beaming while his sister sang the National Anthem for thousands and she in turn was beaming as her brother pinned Lake Orion's, Paul Scott in 2:42, in his opening match. Hosking lost his second match 4-6 to Temperance Bedford's eighth ranked Adam Ortman, in what many were mumbling was a bad call which sent Hosking to the consolation rounds where he would pin ninth ranked Dylan Morantes of Westland John Glenn in 2:23 and #6 ranked Brian Darious in 1:49. A little bit of snow won't stop golfers from kicking off the Michigan golf season this weekend. The Michigan Golf Show will be held at Suburban Collection Showplace, 46100 Grand River Avenue in Novi, from Friday through Sunday. Hours are Friday 2-8 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost is $10 for adults. Children 12 and younger get in free. Parking is $5. The show will have more than 400 exhibitors, which will include retail, resort and travel information, and deals on Michigan golf courses. Hands-on activities include a closest to the pin contest, 100 feet of hitting nets, and long drive contests. This year marks the 23rd anniversary of the largest consumer golf show in the nation. The Tri-County Senior Softball League (TCSSL) is currently looking for players, managers and scorekeepers- ages 55 and up- for the upcoming 2013 season. The co-ed league encourages both men and women to come out and participate. The TCSSL currently has three teams from Hartland, one team from Linden and will be adding a fifth team from Brighton for the upcoming season. The senior softball league promises a fun experience, exercise, competition as well as the opportunity to meet some great people. Spring training and tryouts will be held at the Tag's Sports Complex in Hartland beginning April 8 at 10 am.
