'It's a Wonderful Life' Actress Recalls Classic Film Role in Visit to Plymouth

Virginia Patton of Dexter, who portrayed Ruth Dakin Bailey in 'It's a Wonderful Life,' appeared Sunday at the Penn Theatre in Plymouth.

OUTSIDE DETROIT– Giving up a promising career in Hollywood to start a family might be a difficult choice for a talented young actress, but for Virginia Patton, the decision paved the way for a wonderful life away from the limelight. Patton, now 86, portrayed Ruth Dakin Bailey in the 1946 Frank Capra classic It’s a Wonderful Life, starring alongside such screen legends as James Stewart and Donna Reed at just 20 years old, but left acting soon afterwards to move to Ann Arbor to pursue a family with husband Cruse W. Moss, a successful automotive executive. Patton, of Dexter, and Moss appeared together Sunday at the historic Penn Theatre in downtown Plymouth for a screening of It’s a Wonderful Life, where the former actress signed autographs …

Highland Welcomes The Holidays

Santa arrives in Highland Township at a festive community tree lighting event Monday evening.

Highland Township residents enjoyed wet but warm weather for the town's annual Tree Lighting and Sing Along Event in Veteran's Park Monday evening. Emcee Mike Maher of the DDA and Highland Feed introduced the evening's entertainers: Ms. Lapratt's honor choir from Spring Mills Elementary School and Ms. Heeber's 4th grade class from Highland Elementary School. The kids wore festive red and white Santa hats and were surrounded by enthusiastic friends and family as they sang Christmas favorites. Santa arrived just as the children finished singing a spirited rendition of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town." He used his special Christmas magic and the help of the children shouting "Merry Christmas" to fill the town tree with colorful twinkling …

Annual White Lake Christmas Event Dec. 5

The annual White Lake tree lighting event is next week.

Kick off the holiday season with the annual tree lighting event in White Lake Township at Village Lakes Shopping Center. The event starts at 6 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m. in the area near The Root Restaurant & Bar, Marshalls, Waterfall Jewelers and JCPenney. Those who attend can expect a variety of activities and entertainment including: You can enter the White Lake Library's Gingerbread House contest now, or have your children color the poster available here as part of the holiday coloring contest. If you arrive, arrive early - the event usually attracts a large group and parking will fill up quickly.

Patch's Holiday Event Guide for Metro Detroit 2012

Looking for some holiday cheer within an hour's drive? We've got lights, Santas, parades and more happing in the greater Detroit area.

We combed our Patches for some great holiday events to put together this list of holiday happenings all over Southeast Michigan. Get out and have some festive fun! Milford Christmas Parade: 10 a.m. Nov. 24 on Main Street in downtown Milford. This is one of the longest-standing Main Street traditions around. It's a wonderful holiday event for the entire region. Come early! Main Street fills up fast. Highland Tree Lighting: 7 p.m., Dec. 3, at Veterans Park and Highland Station House in Highland. There will be caroling, cookies and cider. Come watch Santa light the Highland Christmas Tree using Christmas magic. Santa will then move to the Highland Station House where kids can visit with him and share what they want for Christmas.
