Man Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter in Highland Man's Death

Police say Evan James Wells punched Highland's Ronald Smith, who fell and hit his head on the cement at a Holly bar and died three days later.

Fenton resident Evan James Wells has pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges in Oakland County Circuit Court and also to being a Habitual Fourth Offender. Sentencing will take place at Oakland County Circuit Court at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 26. Wells is held at Oakland County Jail pending sentencing. Police responded to a call from Martini’s Bar & Grill in the Village of Holly for an assault complaint on Friday, Oct. 12. Officers arrived and found a 43-year-old Highland man lying unconscious outside the bar, according to Holly police. Rescue crews transported the victim, who police have identified as Ronald Smith, 43, of Highland, to Genesys Regional Medical Center, where he never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead three days later, …

Three Thefts from Vehicles Reported in Highland

The following information was supplied by the Highland Oakland County Sheriff Substation. Arrests and charges do not indicate convictions.

Oakland County Sheriff's deputies were called to a home on the 4000 block of Mallard's Landing in Highland after the homeowner noticed items missing from his cars. According to the report, the incident happened sometime between Sept. 24 and Sept. 25. The man told deputies, the report states, that several items were taken from two unlocked cars parked in the driveway of his home. In total, $840 worth of electronics, including an amplifier and sub-woofers, and sunglasses were reported missing. There are no suspects at this time. The incident remains under investigation. Ketchup Bomb Damages Parked Car in Highland

The following information was supplied by the Oakland County Sheriff's Department, Highland substation. Arrests and charges do not indicate convictions.

Deputies in Highland are looking for the person who set off a ketchup bomb, damaging a car parked off Duck Lake Road. According to the report, the incident happened sometime between 12:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Aug. 3. The report states that a ketchup bomb, which is a firecracker set in a plastic cup filled with ketchup, was lit and placed into an unlocked 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass sedan. The ketchup and debris from the bomb was dispersed throughout the interior of the car. The seats and upholstery had stains from the condiment. Evidence was collected at the scene, and the incident remains under investigation. Police: Kids Throwing Rocks From Overpass Damage Cars

The following information was supplied by the Oakland County Sheriff's Department, Highland substation. Arrests and charges do not indicate convictions.

Deputies were called to the overpass at M-59 and Milford Road June 30 at 8:42 p.m. after two drivers reported that children were throwing items off the overpass onto the cars below. According to the report, the children were throwing stones and sticks. At least two cars were damaged, and pulled over at the scene when police arrived. One driver told police, according to the report, that he chased the kids who ran south along the railroad tracks before he lost sight of them. The roof of a Ford Escape was damaged, along with the passenger-side windshield of a Buick. Deputies searched the area, but could not find the children responsible. Two Teens Arrested Following Destruction of Property in Highland

Two 19-year-old men were arrested June 19 after police say they damaged a number of cars and the front window of a bank in Highland Township. According to the report filed with Oakland County Sheriff's Highland substation, the two were riding in a vehicle with two women sometime between June 18 and June 19 when they started to argue with the woman. Det. James Bowie said the woman kicked the men out of the car near Wardlow on M-59. Both men, the report states, were intoxicated. The report states the two men entered the LaFontaine used car lot and broke into several vehicles causing damage.
