Deputies, Police Continue to Investigate Credit Card Number Thefts

More cases of credit card number thefts are popping up in White Lake and Highland

Last week detectives with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Highland Substation said the department was being inundated with reports of identity and credit card number thefts. White Lake Police Chief Ed Harris said his department is joining the investigation after some area residents reported similar thefts. Harris said the cases have several similarities, including an unknown person using stolen credit card numbers at businesses in White Lake and the surrounding area, and victims still having possession of the credit cards being used. "We're investigating it along with Highland," Harris said. "We know there are some places that all these victims have in common so we are working on those leads." I also had this happen to me. My debit card number was stolen with the card still in my possesion on February 7th as did my boyfriend that same weekend. Thankfully our bank put blocks on both of our accounts after the attempted transactions. I was told by the cardmember services people that mine was a well known fraudulent transaction called Hearth Inn which is supposed to be a fake hotel chain. …   more ›

Deputies Say Highland Plagued By Identity Thefts

Detective James Bowie said the Highland Substation has taken at least a report a day in the last week for identity thefts in the area.

A rash of identity thefts has hit Highland Township according to detectives with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Highland Substation. "It seems like we've taken at least a report a day," Detective James Bowie said. "It's really been unusual. Most have been thefts of credit card numbers." Bowie said the Highland residents have called after someone has used their credit card numbers in store at places such as the White Lake Meijer, Kroger and Walmart, the Walmart in Hartland and the Meijer in Hartland to buy hundreds of dollars worth of items. "The victims still have the cards, so we're trying to figure out how the person or persons got the numbers and were able to purchase items in the stores without having the actual card," Bowie said…

Tires Stolen from 3 Highland Auto Dealerships

The following information was supplied by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Highland Substation. Arrests and charges do not indicate convictions.

Oakland County Sheriff's Deputies are looking to find the people responsible for the thefts of tires and rims off of used vehicles from area dealerships. Det. Jim Bowie said Szott Dodge, Lafontaine Mazda and Jay Chevrolet all had at least one used car in their lot jacked up with the new tire and rims missing. The incidents happened sometime between Friday and Monday. Bowie said deputies arrived on the scene and found tracks leading to Hickory Ridge Road from Jay Chevrolet. "It appears they loaded things into a vehicle and left the scene," he said. The incidents remain under investigation.

Deputies Looking For Man Wanted in Theft of Energy Drinks

Deputies are asking for the public's help in identifying a man wanted for retail fraud in Highland.

Man Wanted In Connection to Retail Fraud in Highland

Police are asking for the public's help in identifying a man wanted for retail fraud in Highland.

2 Highland Men Arraigned On Felony Larceny, Home Invasion Charges

The following information was supplied by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Highland Substation. Arrests and charges do not indicate convictions.

Two Highland men that deputies say are responsible for taking thousands of dollars worth of items from home in Livingston County, Highland and White Lake were arraigned Jan. 25 and Jan. 30. According to Det. Jim Bowie with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Highland Substation, Michael Robert Brown, 21 was arraigned Jan. 25 on two counts of felony home invasion, first degree; one count of breaking and entering; and one count of larceny from auto. Brown's bond was set at $250,000 cash. Brown was also arraigned on November 2012 on similar charges by White Lake Police for larcenies in White Lake. Nicholas Paul Kent, 25, was arraigned Jan. 30 on one count of felony home invasion, first degree and one misdemeanor count of breaking and entering…

Man Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter in Highland Man's Death

Police say Evan James Wells punched Highland's Ronald Smith, who fell and hit his head on the cement at a Holly bar and died three days later.

Fenton resident Evan James Wells has pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges in Oakland County Circuit Court and also to being a Habitual Fourth Offender. Sentencing will take place at Oakland County Circuit Court at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 26. Wells is held at Oakland County Jail pending sentencing. Police responded to a call from Martini’s Bar & Grill in the Village of Holly for an assault complaint on Friday, Oct. 12. Officers arrived and found a 43-year-old Highland man lying unconscious outside the bar, according to Holly police. Rescue crews transported the victim, who police have identified as Ronald Smith, 43, of Highland, to Genesys Regional Medical Center, where he never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead three days later, …

Fenton Man Pleads Guilty to Highland Church Break-In

The following information was supplied by the Oakland County Sheriff's Department, Highland substation. Arrests and charges do not indicate convictions.

The 23-year-old Fenton man arrested in Highland after deputies say he broke into Cornerstone Church in Highlan pled guilty Jan. 9 to the charge, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office. The man was sentenced to 365 days in Oakland County Jail. According to the initial report, deputies were called to the church on the 4900 block of Hickory Ridge Road on the morning of Dec. 3. "When we first responded we checked the church and didn't find anyone," Det. Jim Bowie said. "We got called back 40 minutes later and found the man sleeping in the church." The report states that the man had some of the church's electronic equipment with him, including a camera. "We think he might have intended to take the items from the church, but fell …
