Highland Middle School will no longer be used as a voting precinct in Highland. The school was closed by the Huron Valley School District in 2011.
Polling precinct number four in Highland Township has been moved from Highland Middle School to Highland Elementary School for the Nov. 6 election, and all future elections, according to Highland Township. Voters in the precinct should have received a new voter registration card in the mail. Highland Elementary is located at 300 W. Livingston Road. White Lake residents have donated almost $20,000 to Barack Obama or Mitt Romney, according to an interactive database of campaign contributions from the Federal Election Commission. Highland residents have donated just over $9,000.
This election cycle, White Lake and Highland residents are giving larger contributions to Republican candidate Mitt Romney, but President Barack Obama is getting more contributions from both townships. According to Federal Election Commission records, White Lake residents have made four donations of $1,000 or more to both presidential campaigns. Of those, two were checks to Romney for $1,000 apiece. In Highland, residents have made two donations of $1,000. Both of those dontations were checks to Romney, for $2,500 apiece. In total, White Lake residents have contributed almost $20,000 to the candidates, and Highland residents have contributed just over $9,000. Residents within the Huron Valley School District will vote on two school board seats during the November general election.
The primaries are over, which means local, state and national candidates are working full steam-ahead for the November general election. We know who will be on the ballot for various state and regional elections, but many local races didn't make it onto the primary ballot. The deadline for school board candidates to file was 4 p.m. Tuesday, so who's in the running this fall? There are two seats up for grabs on the Huron Valley School Board of Education. The .75 mill request will be a new two-year millage that will cost a person owning a home with a taxable value of $100,000 an additional $75 a year.
In just a few days, voters in Highland will be asked to approved a new .75 millage request to fund the township's contract with the Oakland County Sheriff's Department. Sgt. Matt Snyder with the Oakland County Sheriff's department said the money, if passed, will go towards bringing back two positions at the Highland Substation. It will cost $75 per year for those residents who own a home with a taxable value of $100,000. The collection will be for two years. According to Snyder, the department, which patrols all 36 square miles of the township, has been reduced by 25 percent since 2009 resulting in the loss of 3 patrol deputies, 1 detective and 1 lieutenant position.
