The Township board officially approved the hiring of 31 firefighters last week.
The Highland Township Board of Trustees recently discovered there were more than 30 firefighters working for the township whose hiring was not officially approved by the board. The board unanimously approved the hiring of all 31 firefighers, retroactive to their original date of hire. The firefighters included 11 from Station 1, 11 from Station 2 and nine from Station 3.
The Highland Fire Department officials said the fire started at 2 p.m. and might have started as an electrical fire.
The family needs donations of clothes and pet items according to a family friend.
A fire Wednesday night destroyed a home on the 200 block of Sutherland in Highland. According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Tina Engle, a neighbor of the home's owner, said the family was able to escape the fire without injury along with their cat, dog and bird. However, the home and everything in it was destroyed. Engle said the family needs the following items: Engle said all items can be dropped off at 250 Sutherland Drive in Highland.
