Red Wings Alumni to Play Hockey for O'Rourke Charity, Get Tickets in White Lake

Tickets are still available for Dec. 21 charity game at Plymouth’s Compuware Arena. Highland Resident, and former Red Wing player, Joe Kocur is organizing the event.

Red and blue may not be Christmas colors, but the two will face off in the spirit of the season to raise funds for the family of fallen West Bloomfield Police Department Officer Patrick O'Rourke. The Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association and the Joe Kocur Foundation for Children will hit the ice at Compuware Arena in Plymouth Dec. 21 to play a charity hockey game, the proceeds of which will be donated to the O'Rourke Family Trust. O'Rourke, 39, was fatally shot Sept. 9 while responding with other officers to what police believed could have been a suicidal man. The incident sparked a barricaded gunman standoff that ended when police found the suspect, Ricky Coley, 50, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. O'Rourke was the department's …

Lakeland Grad Uses Hockey to Help Others' Wishes Come True

Commerce resident Jimmy Vish has organized a charitable hockey game Saturday in Fraser to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Commerce Township resident and 2008 Lakeland High School graduate Jimmy Vish may not have scored the winning goal for a state championship high school game, nor was he a star hockey player in the high school ranks. But his impact as a hockey player is turning out to be more significant in the lives of area children and teens than wins in high school could ever mean. That's because Vish is a driving force behind the Great Lakes Summer Classic, being held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Great Lakes Sports City ice arena in Fraser. Vish is using his love of the sport and a friendly rivalry with a boyhood pal to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan. The puck will drop on the charity game at 8 p.m. Teams have been recruited by …

Seniors Come Up Big For Eagles in Battle For Barber's Cup

Lakeland beats rival Milford 6-2.

Following a players-only closed door meeting to address the teams issues, the Lakeland Eagles routed the Milford Mavericks, 6-2, in the battle for the Barber’s Cup Wednesday night at the Lakeland Tri-Arena. “This was huge for us. They did this (meeting) all on their own,” Lakeland head coach Tim Ronayne said. “They did a lot of off-ice stuff. To come back from a losing effort last night and be able to pick it up says a lot. The rivalry between these two schools is immense.” “This (game) was everything to us,” player Evan Ronayne said. Lakeland has had possession of the trophy for the past four years. Last year ended in a tie and with Lakeland winning the first game, they will retain possession of the trophy. Milford has owned the trophy …
