Huron Valley CTE Students Recognized

Jason Drouillard of Lakeland High School and Anna Schafer of Milford High School were awarded CTE Students of the Year.

Two Huron Valley students were recognized at the Oakland County CTE (Career Tech Education) Student Recognition Night at Oakland Schools on Thursday, May 2nd.   Jason Drouillard of Lakeland High School and Anna Schafer of Milford High School were awarded CTE Students of the Year. "Jason Drouillard has been involved in Lakeland High School Career & Technical Education since he was a freshman, participating in Drafting & Design, and Business Management I and II.  Jason has also been an active and enthusiastic member of the HOT Team, Huron Valley Robotics team for four years. Huron Valley Oakland County Teacher of the Year Nominees to be Honored

Greg Ristau, teacher at Spring Mills Elementary and Wendy Schmitt, teacher at Lakeland High School were recognized during a ceremony Thursday in Waterford.

Oakland Schoolsl honored two Huron Valley educators Thursday during the 26th annual Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards in Waterford. Greg Ristau, teacher at Spring Mills Elementary and Wendy Schmitt, teacher at Lakeland High School will be recognized during National Teacher Appreciation Week for their contributions in the classroom. Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards are given each year to teachers at the elementary, middle and high school levels who excel in the following areas. Huron Valley Schools Partner With Driving School

Students can now learn to drive and support the school district at the same time.

Huron Valley Schools have announced that they are now partnering with Courtesy Driving School, where part of the student drivers' tuition will be given back to the school district. "Please consider supporting and signing up for classes with Courtesy Driving School as you can see that they are providing a high quality driver education program to our students while financially aiding our District," states an email from the school district listserv. According to the email, Courtesy Driving School is one of the oldest and most reliable driving schools in the state of Michigan. Demolition To Begin at Highland Middle, Baker Elementary Schools

The area will be off-limits to everyone.

Demolition is set to begin Monday for Baker Elementary School and Highland Middle School, according to an email from Huron Valley Schools. Fences will be erected around the properties and it is expected that heavy equipment will be on site beginning the week of April 8. According to the school district email, the demolition area is off-limits due to the fact that conditions will be unsafe for anyone other than those trained for this type of work. "We are asking for cooperation from our neighbors and others to ensure that only those with permission are on site," the email states. Due to declining enrollment and diminished state aid, the two schools were closed in 2011. The Board of Education then decided in December 2012 to demolish the …

HVS, HVEA Agree to Two-Year Contract Extension

The extension was approved by the HVEA membership in voting over a four-day period. The HVS Board of Education voted unanimously in support of the measure at a special meeting on Monday, March 25.

HIGHLAND, MI—Huron Valley Schools (HVS) and the Huron Valley Education Association (HVEA) have agreed to a two-year extension to the existing collective bargaining agreement between the parties.  The goal of the extension is to achieve longer-term financial stability for the district. Over the past several years HVS and its employee groups have worked hard to create and maintain collaborative working relationships. Decisions regarding insurance have become transparent through the use of a district-wide committee of representatives from the various employee groups. Highland Elementary Will Have No Phone Service Tuesday Afternoon

The school's phone service will be interrupted after school hours.

Highland Elementary The service interruption will begin at approximately 4:15 p.m while the fiber optic line is being worked on.  For emergencies, parents may call the district's main line at 248-684-8000, who will be able to reach the school.

2 Lakeland Students Taken to Hospital After Eating Drug-Laced Food, Police Say

The following information was supplied by White Lake Township police. Arrests and charges do not indicate convictions.

Two Lakeland High School students were taken to the hospital Friday around noon after White Lake Police say the students ingested drugs. School Resource Officer Jon Kirken with White Lake Police said three students are suspected to have eaten a food product with either marijuana or THC in it while at school Friday. Of the three students, two had to be taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening symptoms after ingesting the food and suspected drugs. Kirken said there are few details that can be released at this time, including the ages of the students. The incident remains under investigation.

Huron Valley Schools Allow Six Snow Days for School Year

Most of the schools in the district have used four snow days this year, with the exception of three schools that are at five snow days.

This year, the winter months in the White Lake-Highland area have brought icy conditions and large amounts of snow which have resulted in four snow days for Huron Valley students, according to Chellie Francis and the Pupil Accounting Department for Huron Valley Schools. "However, Country Oaks Elementary, Johnson Elementary, and Oak Valley Middle School have all had to cancel an additional day due to power outages, and they are at five days," Francis wrote in an email to White Lake-Highland Patch. Per the pupil accounting manual, Huron Valley Schools is given six days, according to the email, which means the schools still have one more day that could be canceled before they would consider rescheduling any more days of instruction.
