Run for Boston To Be Held at Kensington Wednesday

Running Fit is uniting Michigan runners to show their support for Boston.

To celebrate the safe return of Boston Marathon runners and to show solidarity for Boston, Running Fit will be hosting a "Runners For Boston" run/walk this week. The unity 4.15 mile run/walk will be held on Wednesday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m.at Kensington Metropark, and participants should meet at the East Boat Launch. On the Running Fit website, Randy Step writes that running has taken on a new meaning for runners after the April 15 bombings. "Every step feels like a dedication to those who suffered. Just heading out the door is like thumbing our nose at terrorists that are out to change our way of life and limit our freedoms," he writes on the website. April Events at Indian Springs and Kensington Metroparks

Looking for something to do with the kids? Check out these events at the local metroparks.

The following are the events listed for both Indian Spring Metropark in White Lake, and Kensington Metropark in Milford for the month of April. A Metroparks vehicle entry permit is required to enter any Metropark and is only $25 annually for regular admission, $15 annually for seniors or $5 daily. For additional information or to register for programs at the Indian Springs Metropark Environmental Discovery Center near White Lake, please call 248-625-7280. “Tot Time: “Groundhog Day,” Saturday, February 2 at 10 am, Environmental Discovery Center. The loveable furry groundhog will let us know today whether there is six more weeks of winter or six more weeks until spring! Participants will learn about the interesting lives that groundhogs lead. Children, ages 3 to 5 years, should be prepared to go outdoors to see if they can find where Mr. Groundhog has been hiding out this winter. Fee: $5 per person. Where Are the Best Sledding Hills in the White Lake-Highland Area?

Where is your favorite place to sled in and around White Lake and Highland?

Nothing says "snow day" like gathering up the kids and heading to the nearest sledding hill for hours of winter fun. In the White Lake-Highland area, one of the most popular sledding spots is at Kensington Metropark in Milford - in fact, it was even included on a list of best hills by CBS Detroit. Not on the list, but popular in the area, are the hills at Indiant Springs Metropark in White Lake. If you are willing to travel, Farmington's Shiawassee Park was included on CBS Detroit's recent list of the best sledding hills in metro Detroit with the caveat that the hill is so popular, it can sometimes be too crowded. Another nearby hill on the list is Northville's Cass Benton Park on Hines Drive between Six and Seven Mile Roads. Not on the …

Couple Save Man's Life at Kensington Metropark

The quick action of a couple during a charity walk at Kensington saved a man who suffered a heart attack during the event.

(Source: DMC Hospitals) A Physician Assistant at Detroit Medical Center’s Cardiovascular Institute, along with his wife, also a Physician Assistant, helped save a life last Sunday, Sept. 16, after a man collapsed during a charity fundraiser walk at Kensington Metropark. The patient, in his late 70s, had only minutes to live after suffering a cardiac arrest. Slobodan Djordjevic, his wife, Jamie, and about 13 of their family members were finishing up the walk when suddenly everything changed. Jamie Djordjevic, had noticed the man looking ashen and as he collapsed against a tree, she got to him and began CPR, immediately calling for Slobodan to help. The two had to perform “aggressive” CPR for about 20 minutes, until an ambulance came, …

Shuttle Astronaut to Speak at Kensington Metropark Star Gazing Event

Lake Orion native Dr. Andrew Feustel will speak at the 16th Annual Astronomy at the Beach event, which will feature many activities, demonstrations and dozens of telescopes.

Two-time shuttle astronaut and geophysicist Dr. Andrew Feustel will be the featured speaker at Astronomy at the Beach, hosted Sept. 21 and 22 by Kensington Metropark and the Great Lakes Association of Astronomy Clubs (GLAAC).  According to the event website, Feustel, a native of Lake Orion, "will talk about his work repairing the Hubble and installing modules on the International Space Station, as well as the future of space exploration." Astronomy on the Beach offers something for everyone interested in astronomy. Events begin at 6 p.m. and include night sky simulation tours using a portable planetarium, an introduction to using telescopes, discussions about light pollution and outer space, and a 3D voyage into deep space.
