Lakeland Hockey Regional Champions Playoff Run Ends

Eagles lose to Birmingham Brother Rice 9-1 Tuesday.

The Lakeland hockey regional champions wrapped up an outstanding playoff run in the elite 8 of the Division 2 hockey playoffs Tuesday evening. The Eagles lost to Birmingham Brother Rice 9-1 in the quarterfinal game in Novi. The loss ends a magnificent playoff run that saw the Eagles win three straight games to put them in the Elite 8 in Division 2 hockey. Lakeland’s head coach Tim Ronayne said he was very proud of his squad’s performance in the post season winning the first regional title since 1981. “It’s hard to describe the feeling that the team had," Ronayne said. Lakeland Claims First Regional Title Since 1981

The Lakeland Eagles hockey team clinched the regional title with an overtime win over Waterford Mott.

The following was submitted to White Lake Patch by Pat Kalinowski. Kyle Jakubowski scored the game winning goal 1:47 in overtime, banging in a rebound off of a Bobby Schumacher shot from the point to send Lakeland to the elite eight of the state tournament.   After a scoreless first period it was Mott's Tyler Vaughan who opened the scoring in the second period after he went end to end and beat Eagles goalie Mitch Leist at the 11:38 mark of the second period.   Lakeland's Kevin Lechner answered for the Eagles when he sniped Mott goalie John Furton with 8:57 left to play in the second period.   The Eagles came out in the third and peppered Furton with 22 shots while Mott could only manage two shots on Leist. Lakeland Hockey Beats Walled Lake Northern 3-1 to Advance Saturday Against Mott

Sophomore call-up Justin Pahl scores the game winning goal as Lakeland upsets Walled Lake Northern 3-1.

The following was submitted to White Lake Patch by Pat Kalinowski. Lakeland sophomore Justin Pahl was called up to Varsity and playing in his third game for the Eagles Wednesday night. Pahl’s first career varsity goal came at the 10:58 mark of the third period and put Lakeland up 2-1. After a scoreless first period it was Northern’s Chad Bailey (Rob Luzynski, Kyle Adkins) putting the Knights up 1-0 at the 12:51 mark of the second. The Eagles fought back and Kevin Lechner tied it up with 48 seconds left in the second period after Kyle Jakubowski drove hard to net creating a rebound for Lechner. It was a tight third period until Lakeland’s Jakubowski wheeled around in the slot and fired a shot on Knight’s goalie Grant Luzynski. Pahl was …

Lakeland Hockey Team Makes A Difference At Oxbow Elementary School

High school players carry on tradition by visiting classes to read to kindergarten and first-grade students.

Members of the Lakeland High School hockey team continued their tradition of making a difference for students at Oxbow Elementary School in White Lake by visiting classrooms Wednesday afternoon to read to kids. This tradition has been going on for more than seven years. Kindergarten and first-grade kids were amazed at the size of the players, and had fun asking them questions after each story. The players stressed how important it is to read every day, and how you must try your best in the classroom if you are going to participate in sports.  After the players finished reading, they joined kindergarteners during their physical education class. The kids looked like they had fun playing with the big hockey players during gym. Head Coach Tim …

Milford Doubles Up Lakeland 6-3

The Maverick hockey team beat cross town rivals, the Lakeland Eagles, 6-3

The Milford hockey team beat Lakeland 6-3 Saturday afternoon at the Lakeland Ice Arena. The game was highlighted by tough checking and end to end action.  Lakeland junior forward Garrett Unsworth opened the scoring with a goal at the 9:58 mark of the 1st period. The Mavericks tied the game less than a minute later on a goal by senior Michael Pobur. Milford got a power play goal at the 4:04 mark of the 1st period to take a 2-1 lead after 15 minutes. The Mavericks got two goals midway through the second period before Garrett Unsworth got his second goal with 5:52 left in the period cutting the lead to 4-2. Milford got their 5th goal with just 5.3 seconds in the period for a 5-2 lead. The Eagles played hard in the third period as the game got…

Patch Whiz Kid of the Week: Lakeland Goaltender Trevor Kalinowski

This week's honoree had a stunning 42 saves and led his team to victory against the division leader.

Who: Trevor Kalinowski School: Junior, Lakeland High School Accomplishment: Kalinowski made 42 saves last Wednesday against division leader Waterford Mott for a 2-0 shutout win. Key to Awesomeness: The Lakeland Eagles shut out Waterford Mott 2-0 Wednesday night. Junior goalie Trevor Kalinowski was outstanding in goal leading the Eagles to the win. Kalinowski said the key to the win was “to keep my head in the game, work hard and honestly play out of my head. The defense moved guys out and sacrificed their bodies which made my job a lot easier,” he said.
