Milford Tops Cross Town Rival Lakeland 35-32

Milford's win all but dashes Lakeland's hopes for making the playoffs

The Milford Mavericks topped cross town rival Lakeland 35-32 in a steady rain Friday night. The Mavericks scored first on a 5-yard run by quarterback Alex Larson capping an 80-yard drive. Milford’s defense held the Eagles on their opening drive and took over at their own 20 yard line after an Eagle punt. The Mavericks scored quickly as Larson hooked up with Jonathon Schwartz on a 75-yard touchdown pass as the visitors took a 14-0 lead.  The Mavericks took a 14-0 lead into the second quarter as the rain continued. Lakeland got the offense going as quarterback Ross Heiman scored from 7-yards out to cut the lead to 14-6.  Milford came right back on a dazzling 50-yard scamper by Robert Ritchie giving the Mavericks a first down at the Lakeland …

Lakeland's 10th Annual Tastefest Friday

Enjoy foods from local restaurants and a rivalry football game Friday night at Lakeland High School in White Lake.

The 10th Annual Lakeland High School Tastefest will kick off Friday, Oct. 19, at Lakeland High School before the Lakeland vs. Milford rivalry football game. Starting at 5 p.m., attendees will be able to purchase 10 food tickets for $5 at the Lakeland cafeteria. The event will run through halftime of the varsity football game. The event is one of the largest fundraising events for the Lakeland athletic program. Participating restaurants include: Also at the game, Szott Dodge will be hosting a test drive event from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. For every test drive, Szott Dodge will donate $20 to Lakeland athletics. Milford Football Rolls by Flushing 42-21

The Mavericks won their football home opener Friday.

The Milford Mavericks rolled to a 42-21 win over Flushing on Friday night before an enthusiastic crowd. Senior quarterback Alex Larson led the Mavericks to the win behind a dominating offensive line. Larson rushed for 96 yards while completing 8 of 11 passes for 194 yards including a touchdown pass to John Bartoluzzi. Maverick running back Danny Wallace had a big night scoring three touchdowns. Wallace ran between the tackles for 96 tough yards on 21 carries. Junior defensive back Darrion Spencer picked up a fumble and returned it for a touchdown for the Maverick defense. Linebacker Cameron Bell jammed the middle all night and had a big sack in the third quarter.   The Mavericks are on the road for the first time on Thursday as they travel…

MHSAA Institutes New Rules for High School Football Beginning in 2012

Football teams across Michigan, including those from Lakeland and Milford, began practice last week while getting used to several new rules from the MHSAA.

The 2012-13 fall sports season officially began this week, when approximately 110,000 student-athletes in Michigan begin practice in eight sports regulated by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). Practice began for Michgan's football players last Monday, followed by all other fall sports — from cross country to boys tennis — on Wednesday. Schools must have 12 days of preseason practice at all levels before their first game. For the Lakeland Eagles, the varsity team plays their first game of the season away Aug. 24 against Northville High School. The varsity team from Milford High School, meanwhile, plays Flushing High School on Aug. 24. Their first game is a home game. Before the first whistle, Huron Valley's student …
