Help Make Snowflakes for Newtown Kids

Snowflake creators from throughout the country say they want to join the effort to help the students that survived the Sandy Hook shooting.

People across the country have had the families of Newtown, Conn. in their minds for the past couple of weeks - and, during the holidays, they're in our thoughts more than ever. How can you help? The Sandy Hook Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) recently announced that Sandy Hook students will be relocating to another building to continue school in January. To brighten the students' first day, the PTA is asking for handmade snowflakes from well-wishers across the country, to hang in their new building. "Please help these students have a 'winter wonderland' at their new school! Get creative. No two snowflakes are alike," they said. Huron Valley Superintendent Speaks Out About Security in the District

Following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT., Huron Valley Schools Superintendent Jim Baker said the district is actively reviewing security procedures at all district schools.

The following is a message from Huron Valley Schools Superintendent Jim Baker. Good morning HVS Parents and Guardians: Like many of you, over the weekend I watched in horror and sadness the unfolding news coverage of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary. As a school administrator in a community known to be safe and closely knit, I am struggling to come to grips with how this happens and the unfortunate frequency of these types of events.  As a father, I cannot imagine the unbearable grief the families must be experiencing. White Lake and Highland Parents Report Extra Security at Elementary Schools

Several parents reported a police presence at elementary schools throughout the area. The increased security is in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings in Newtown, CT.

When White Lake resident Meloney Lambert dropped off her two eight-year-old daughters at Lakewood Elementary in White Lake, she noted two police cars near the school - an increased security measure taken in the wake of Friday's shooting in Newtown, CT. "My one daughter asked me, 'Why are the policeman here mommy?' at this point I (was) fighting back the tears trying to tell her that they are just doing their jobs driving around the schools," Lambert said. "I am just so grateful that the White Lake Police Department decided to have officers at the school this morning," she said. "That made me feel so much better about my girls going to school." 27 people, 20 of them children, are reported dead in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, according to Newtown Patch. What will you say to your children?

Parents' hearts are in their throats in the White Lake-Highland area and across the country as news spreads of an elementary school shooting in Connecticut that reportedly took the lives of 20 children and seven adults. Newtown Patch in Connecticut is posting live updates about the shooting, which was reportedly carried out by a single adult who is now dead. The incident will raise questions about how future such massacres can be prevented.
