The Patch Fights Hunger initiative spurred 119 people in 30 Patch cities to donate to Gleaners Community Food Bank this holiday season.
More than 16,500 men, women and children in Metro Detroit will have a warm, healthy meal provided by Gleaners Community Food Bank this holiday season—and it's all thanks to Patch readers. Throughout the month of November, 30 Michigan Patch communities took part in the Patch Fights Hunger virtual food drive, raising funds for Gleaners. Gleaners distributes 100,000 meals each day to hungry people in southeast Michigan, and in the month of giving thanks, Patch partnered with the nonprofit to start the first-ever virtual food drive. The season of giving isn't over yet—so why should our Patch Fights Hunger virtual food drive end so soon? As such, we've extended our drive supporting Gleaners Community Food Bank until Nov. 25. On Thanksgiving, a day when every American family gives thanks for the things in their life, most of us will enjoy a feast with our families. But there are still many people who don't have enough to eat—including one out of every four children. Gleaners distributes 100,000 meals each day to hungry people in southeast Michigan, and we want to help them with their goal by raising $10,000 through the Patch Fights Hunger online food drive. One in four Michigan children lives in poverty. In this season of being thankful and giving back, here are ways to help make others' holidays warmer.
The holiday season is a time of joy, and if one's lucky, of plenty. Sadly, hunger continues to be a problem, with one in four Michigan children living in poverty and nearly half qualifying for free or low-cost school lunches. If you can spare two hours to deliver meals, then the Western Oakland Meals On Wheels Program needs you! We can use your help delivering meals to the home-bound elderly and disabled people living in your neighborhood. You can be the one who brightens someone’s day by knocking on their door and delivering a nutritious meal. Volunteers do more than simply deliver a meal. They also provide a quick check in, a connection to the community and a warm smile. Often, the volunteer is the only person a meal recipient may see all day. Western Oakland Meals On Wheels is dedicated to ensuring that every member of the community has access to nutritious meals so he or she can continue living independently. The statistics are grim, especially for children. One out of four Michigan children lives in a household with food insecurity, meaning they do not always know where their next meal is coming from. In southeast Michigan, nearly 40 percent of more than 100,000 people receiving food assistance each week are children under age 18. Poor nutrition, particularly in the first three years of life, has profound implications on a child’s physical and mental health, development, academic achievement and economic productivity.
