Help the Needy with the Ring of a Bell

The Salvation Army is looking for volunteer bell ringers for the 2012 Red Kettle Campaign.

The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit is seeking volunteer bell ringers for the 2012 Red Kettle Campaign.  Those interested in volunteering can log on to www.ringbell.org, pick a preferred location and choose a shift date and time (Nov. 9 through Dec. 24) most convenient for them. Volunteers can sign up for one or more shifts, and will receive a confirmation email prior to the selected date. There are nearly 450 locations throughout metro Detroit that need volunteers, individuals and groups included, to fill shifts each now through Christmas Eve (Sundays excluded). “As Michigan poverty levels rise for the fifth consecutive year, the need for social services continues to rise exponentially,” said Major Mark Anderson, general secretary and …

Salvation Army Job Fair to Fill Posts in White Lake

The Salvation Army has a number of open positions at each of its 33 Salvation Army Thrift Stores and three warehouses throughout southeast Michigan.

Finding employment has been difficult for many Michiganders lately, perhaps no more so than those living in the greater Detroit communities. In doing their part to help fight unemployment, the Salvation Army is hosting a job fair from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 17 and 9 a.m. to noon July 18 at the Southeast Michigan Adult Rehabilitation Center, 1627 W. Fort Street, in Detroit. The Salvation Army plans to hire several people to fill a number of positions at its 33 thrift stores, including three warehouses across southeast Michigan. Former Red Wings to Play Troy Teams at Salvation Army Charity Event

Members of the Red Wings Alumni Association will play in a game to raise money to help the homeless and hungry.

Former NHL players will hit the ice Saturday for a charitable cause. The Red Wings Alumni Association is teaming up with Troy athletes in a charity game to benefit the Salvation Army's Bed & Bread Club Radiothon, which will air Feb. 24 on WJR, 760-AM. The Salvation Army's Bed & Bread program serves thousands of meals to the hungry each day and provides shelter for the homeless. Former Red Wings expected to play Saturday include Eddie Mio, John Ogrodnick, Brent Fedyk, Shawn Burr and John Finstrom. Giving during the holidays is like kissing under the mistletoe- not everyone does it, but for those who honor the tradition, it sure feels good.   Last year, my family donated to the Salvation Army. They, of course, do wonderful things in the community such as provide shelters for families, pay bills when needed, provide jobs and job training and generally help the needy any way they can. For my children, though, they decided to donate to the Salvation Army, in honor of their teachers, so they could become "bucket fillers"- a concept taught at their school that teaches them about feelings and making someone feel good by filling their emotional bucket.   My sons saw the traditional red kettles of the Salvation Army set out last year and …

Red Wings to Ring Bells for Salvation Army on Friday

Six Detroit players, coach and general manager scheduled to collect donations in Plymouth, Northville, Birmingham and Troy.

Members of the Detroit Red Wings will be sporting red kettles Friday in Plymouth, Northville, Birmingham and Troy to raise money for the Salvation Army, according to a news release from the team. Coach Mike Babcock and Ken Holland, the team's executive vice president and general manager, will collect donations from 3:30-5:30 p.m. outside Hiller's Market in downtown Northville. Holland is serving as the honorary chairman for the Salvation Army's 2011 Red Kettle Campaign for the sixth straight year, according to the news release. Salvation Army to Celebrate Grand Opening in Highland

A radio broadcast and the Detroit Tigers' mascot will highlight Saturday's event.

The brand-new Salvation Army in Highland will hold its grand opening Saturday starting at 9 a.m. The store, located at 532 W. Highland Rd., is the newest thrift store and donation center in the area. Attendees will be treated to a live broadcast by 104.3 WOMC-FM and a visit from Paws, the Detroit Tigers mascot. Donations are needed and will be accepted throughout the day. The radio broadcast will run from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Paws will be there form 10 a.m. to noon.
