People across the country have had the families of Newtown, Conn. in their minds for the past couple of weeks - and, during the holidays, they're in our thoughts more than ever. How can you help? The Sandy Hook Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) recently announced that Sandy Hook students will be relocating to another building to continue school in January. To brighten the students' first day, the PTA is asking for handmade snowflakes from well-wishers across the country, to hang in their new building. "Please help these students have a 'winter wonderland' at their new school! Get creative. No two snowflakes are alike," they said. Our Patches across the country will take part in a Web Moment of Silence on Friday, and Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has requested that state residents pause to remember those lost last week.
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has asked for a statewide moment of silence at 9:30 a.m. Friday, and Patches in Michigan and across the country will join in a Web Moment of Silence to mark the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. Snyder said the moment of silence was requested by Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy, who issued a proclamation calling on the citizens of Connecticut to observe December 21, 2012, as a day of mourning. Malloy sent a letter to all the nation's governors asking them to observe a moment of silence in remembrance of the fallen. Patch sites across the country will mark the tragedy at 9:30 a.m. EST. Parents have organized a candlelight vigil tonight in Holly to honor the memory of Newtown victims.
A Fenton native hid in a tiny supply closet while a gunman killed 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary in Conneticut last week. Lisa Marlin, an educational assistant at Sandy Hook, who graduated from Lake Fenton High School in 1987 according to her Facebook page, huddled with a co-worker and prayed during the massacre, reported Click on Detroit WDIV Channel 4. When White Lake resident Meloney Lambert dropped off her two eight-year-old daughters at Lakewood Elementary in White Lake, she noted two police cars near the school - an increased security measure taken in the wake of Friday's shooting in Newtown, CT. The following statement was issued by Huron Valley Schools Friday after a gunman killed at least 27 at a school in Newtown, CT. Dear Parents & Guardians, There are no words to express the despair and heartbreak coming out of the situation at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. Our entire nation mourns with the families devastated by this tragedy. Each building administrator in HVS has been asked to review his/her emergency plan to be certain staff members are aware of the content and procedures. Our emergency plans have been reviewed by Oakland County as well as the Michigan State Police Office of Emergency Preparedness, and we regularly update the plans throughout the school year.
