Kerry Bentivolio to Assume Congressional Office Today

113th Congress to swear in today in Washington, D.C.

Congressman-elect Kerry Bentivolio (R-Milford) will assume office today, beginning a two-year term representing Michigan's newly realigned 11th Congressional District. Bentivolio is among 84 freshmen representatives taking part in today's swearing-in ceremonies. Bentivolio, who defeated Syed Taj (D-Canton) in the Nov. 6 election, will succeed U.S. Rep. David Curson (D-Belleville), who won a special election on Nov. 6 to fill the remaining weeks of former U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter's (R-Livonia) term. McCotter resigned his office in July amid a petition-fraud scandal and leak of a television script to Detroit media. According to C-SPAN, the House of Representatives will open the 113th Congress today with elections for House Speaker, …

Curson Discusses Short Term in Congress

Representative David Curson was profiled in Politico on Tuesday.

Newly elected Rep. David Curson has been busy in Congress, according to a profile of him in Politico. Curson won the special election in November to fill the remainder of Thaddeus McCotter's term for Michigan's 11th District, which ends Jan. 2. In just the past few weeks, Curson has had sit-downs with Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer, been assigned to the Science, Space and Technology Committee, and delivered his first House floor speech, the article says.  What else would you like to see Curson accomplish before the end of term? Tell us in the comments.

Curson Wins Partial Term for 11th Congressional District

David Curson beat out Kerry Bentivolio to serve the rest of Thaddeus McCotter's term.

Republican Kerry Bentivolio may have won the general election Tuesday to represent Michigan's 11th District in Congress, but he lost the special election to fill the remainder of Thaddeus McCotter's term. Democrat David Curson beat Bentivolio and will serve the rest of McCotter's term, which ends Dec. 31. Bentivolio will take over in January for a two-year term. The vote to fill a partial term was added to the ballot when McCotter resigned from the position in July after it was discovered that his campaign failed to turn in the requisite number of signatures to run for re-election this past Tuesday. His seat has been vacant for the past four months. Curson received 159,267 votes, or 51 percent of the vote, and Bentivolio received 151,740 …

Updated: Bentivolio Wins 11th Congressional Race

Taj conceded the race Wednesday morning.

Some results are still trickling in, but Democrat Syed Taj conceded the race for Michigan's 11th Congressional District to Republican Kerry Bentivolio Wednesday morning.  "It goes without saying that I am disappointed in last night's results. However, I am not disappointed in the campaign that we have ran in the 11th. We faced a tough map and in spite of this disadvantage worked our district hard and left nothing on the table," Taj said in a statement. Bentivolio spoke to a group of supporters just before midnight Tuesday at his election party at the Sheraton in Novi, thanking them for their support. "We're going to go to Washington, and we're going to represent the 11th District like it's never been represented before," he said. As of …

It's worth stating that Dr Taj did extraordinarily well considering the demographic of the district and the fliers that were mailed claiming his affiliation with Marxists. Crazy.   more ›

Former McCotter Staffer Gets 20 Days in Jail

Lorianne O'Brady gets 20 days in jail or 20 days in work program.

Lorianne O’Brady, who worked as former U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter's scheduler, was sentenced Thursday to 20 days in jail or 20 days in a work program for her role in the petition fraud scandal that led to the Livonia Republican's July resignation. McCotter, who is not charged in the election fraud case, failed to qualify for the Nov. 6 ballot after his signatures were deemed by the Michigan Secretary of State's office to be invalid, containing photocopied signatures from past elections. He quickly abandoned plans to run as a write-in candidate and ultimately resigned his seat in July.  O’Brady, 52, of Livonia pleaded guilty Sept. 18 to five counts of falsely signing a nominating petition as circulator, a misdemeanor, the report said.  O'…

McCotter: Signatures 'Clearly Not Sufficient to Make the Ballot'

Former congressman testifies in petition fraud case that derailed his reelection efforts.

Former U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter testified Oct. 11 that he was unaware that photocopied petition signatures for his reelection had been submitted until Secretary of State Ruth Johnson contacted him to inform him he would not make the August primary ballot, according to the Plymouth Observer.  The scandal thrust McCotter's political career into a tailspin. He quickly aborted plans to run as a write-in candidate after the scandal first broke and resigned his seat in July. McCotter testified he was on a delegation trip to Hawaii when Johnson and his chief of staff each called him to report the irregularities, the report said. McCotter testified that Johnson told him many of the lines on the petition nominating forms appeared broken and …

First elected to Congress in 2002, after serving on the State Senate committee that redrew the district lines after the 2000 Census. To be clear: The 11th District in 2002 was drawn EXPLICITLY for Thaddeus McCotter's benefit. Thad took full advantage of that gerrymandered district, getting re-elected four times (even surviving the Democratic "wave" elections of 2006 and 2008). After the 2010 …   more ›

Bentivolio Wins Special Primary Election to Fill McCotter's Seat

Milford Republican will face Democrat David Curson on Nov. 6 in race to fill remainder of Thaddeus McCotter's term.

Kerry Bentivolio is now 2-for-2 in primary elections for a seat representing Michigan's 11th Congressional District. Bentivolio, of Milford, already the Republican nominee in the Nov. 6 race to hold the seat for a full two-year term, won a special primary election today in a race to fill the remainder for former Rep. Thaddeus McCotter's seat. McCotter, a Livonia Republican, left his seat in July, citing a "nightmarish" month and a half before his resignation, which included a voter fraud scandal that prevented McCotter's name from appearing on the Nov. 6 ballot. Bentivolio on Wednesday soundly defeated a field of four other Republican candidates, including his Aug. 7 primary rival Nancy Cassis of Novi. The race also included Steve King, …

Why exactly is the "craziest conservative" -- the man you call a "flake" -- a lesser evil than a medical doctor who has said in no uncertain terms that he can and will work across the aisle to best serve the people of the 11th District and the State of Michigan? The Hippocratic Oath includes the famous phrase, "first, do no harm." Dr. Syed Taj has no interest in the grandstanding and political …   more ›

Special Election Wednesday to Pick McCotter's Successor

Residents in the current 11th Congressional District will be asked to vote Wednesday, Sept. 5, to pick someone to fill the remainder of Thaddeus McCotter's term. McCotter resigned from the seat earlier this year.

The much-anticipated special primary election to fill Thaddeus McCotter's (R-Livonia) remaining term will take place next week. The Sept. 5 election is happening on a Wednesday, not the usual Tuesday, after the state set the date in July. In Novi, Clerk Maryanne Cornelius said many people don't understand the difference between the August Primary and this special primary, "Turnout for Sept. 5 is likely to be low. I will be surprised if it's as high as 12 percent," she said in an interview with Novi Patch. In White Lake, Deputy Clerk Cathy Derocher said many people have come in seeking absentee ballots not realizing the notices they were getting were for the Sept. 5 election, not the upcoming November election. Derocher said the clerk's …

Oakland County Commissioners Call for Reimbursement of Special Election Costs

The special election to fill Thaddeus McCotter's seat is estimated to cost some townships as much as $30,000.

The Oakland County Board of Commissioners is asking Governor Snyder to reimburse local communities for the $650,000 cost of holding a special election to fill former U.S. Representative Thaddeus McCotter's seat, who left the office in July.  Municipalities in Michigan's 11th Congressional District must hold a special primary on Sept. 5 to narrow down the field of candidates. Voters will cast their ballot for the final winner on Nov. 6 to serve the remainder McCotter's term, which ends in December.  >>MORE: Michigan's 11th Congressional District: A Basic Guide This past Thursday, the commissioners voted 22-2 to ask to state to reimburse the costs of holding a special election. The state is flush with excess funds from the sales tax collected on gasoline, so let them foot the bill. In addition, it was Snyder who signed on for the special election when Kerry Bentivolio was the only name on the ballot. By the way, what ever happened to the calls to eliminate the sales tax when the price per gallon of gas was hovering around $3.00?   more ›

Cassis Pledges To Stay in 11th Congressional District Special Election

Despite defeat in the Aug. 7 primary and previous statements otherwise, Nancy Cassis will continue her bid for Thaddeus McCotter's seat on Sept. 5.

Nancy Cassis lost last week’s primary election, but she is still in the running to be a member of U.S. Congress, for a few months at least. Cassis, who lost her write-in bid against Republican Kerry Bentivolio by 66 percent in the Aug. 7 primary, confirmed that she intends to remain a candidate on the ballot for the Sept. 5 election, according to the National Journal. "My name's on the ballot, yes," she said, noting "it's important to have a presence." The affirmation didn’t sit well with Bentiviolo, of Milford, who has since picked up endorsements from Gov. Rick Snyder and other key members of the Michigan’s Republican Party. He noted that losing the primary election could prevent him from earning some seniority in Congress, should he win…
