Sheriff Tells Oakland County Homeowners How to Avoid a Break-In

Make your home look occupied and difficult to break into, police advise.

Reports of multiple break-ins across Oakland County this month have police issuing warnings and tips to area homeowners. On Tuesday, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard advised residents to take "simple steps to make your home more difficult to enter and less enticing to would-be burglars," he said in a release. Break-ins and home invasions are not uncommon in Highland and White Lake. Bouchard urged residents to make your home look occupied and difficult to break into by following these tips:

Front Door Smashed, Cash Taken from Local Business; Wood Chipper Missing

Your Fit Club in White Lake was broken into in the early morning hours Friday.

White Lake Police are going through evidence collected at the scene of a break-in Friday at Your Fit Club in White Lake. Only cash was reported missing. According to the report, an undetermined amount of cash was taken from the office of the workout facility at 3:30 a.m. The report states an unknown individual smashed the glass on the front door and went to the back office, took the cash, and left. Lt. Don Nankervis said police responded within minutes but could not locate the person responsible. "We have video from the business, and the surrounding businesses, that we are reviewing right now," Nankervis said. The incident remains under investigation.
