Huron Valley Superintendent Says District Will Remain Open

Huron Valley Schools Superintendent Jim Baker said safety of staff and students is the district's highest priority and the district is closely monitoring the schools.

Huron Valley Schools Superintendent Jim Baker just released the following message regarding classes this week. The message is in response to concerns from parents about neighboring districts canceling classes and school activities. Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members –  Like you, we as a school district, are anxious over recent events that have involved school safety. Please know, the safety of students and staff is our highest priority. We are aware that the Genesee County schools made the decision to close all schools. Their news release states that rumors multiplied as a result of social media and the decision was made to close their schools due to their inability to control the rumors. Neighboring Districts Cancel Classes Following Rumors, Should Huron Valley Do the Same?

Rumors of violence and the theory that the world ends on Dec. 21 have caused the school districts in Fenton to cancel classes Thursday and Friday.

Late Wednesday, Genesee County Intermediate School Disrict (ISD) announced that all classes and activities at schools in the county would be canceled for Thursday and Friday - the cancellation was due, in part, to rumors of violence at the schools. These rumors are similar to ones reported at Lakeland High School Wednesday. In a news release, Genesee County ISD explained the decision, "It is clear that last Friday changed all of us. As educators, we acknowledge, and we believe our communities would agree, that schools are at the center of concern right now. If there were threats, and if the end is near who in their right mind would want to be away from their kids and family members by sending them to school?! I would much rather them miss a day or 2 from school then for them and my family to perish apart from each other.   more ›

Lakeland Administration, Police Debunk Rumor of Student With Gun at Lakeland

A rumor has been going around Lakeland High School that a student was planning to bring a gun to school - Lakeland staff said they and officers with the White Lake Police Department have investigated the rumor, and there is no threat to students.

The following is a note home to parents of Lakeland High School students regarding rumors of a student planning to bring a gun to school on Friday, Dec. 21: Hello, It was brought to our attention early this morning that a rumor was being spread about a student bringing a gun to school on Friday. Names were gathered and administration along with Officer (John) Kirken investigated the matter. They found no evidence of any such activity being planned. Throughout the day, the rumor has spread and was posted on social media. We have had numerous students in the office to report that they heard the rumor and were concerned.
