Milford Tops Cross Town Rival Lakeland 35-32

Milford's win all but dashes Lakeland's hopes for making the playoffs

The Milford Mavericks topped cross town rival Lakeland 35-32 in a steady rain Friday night. The Mavericks scored first on a 5-yard run by quarterback Alex Larson capping an 80-yard drive. Milford’s defense held the Eagles on their opening drive and took over at their own 20 yard line after an Eagle punt. The Mavericks scored quickly as Larson hooked up with Jonathon Schwartz on a 75-yard touchdown pass as the visitors took a 14-0 lead.  The Mavericks took a 14-0 lead into the second quarter as the rain continued. Lakeland's 10th Annual Tastefest Friday

Enjoy foods from local restaurants and a rivalry football game Friday night at Lakeland High School in White Lake.

The 10th Annual Lakeland High School Tastefest will kick off Friday, Oct. 19, at Lakeland High School before the Lakeland vs. Milford rivalry football game. Starting at 5 p.m., attendees will be able to purchase 10 food tickets for $5 at the Lakeland cafeteria. The event will run through halftime of the varsity football game. The event is one of the largest fundraising events for the Lakeland athletic program. Participating restaurants include: Also at the game, Szott Dodge will be hosting a test drive event from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. For every test drive, Szott Dodge will donate $20 to Lakeland athletics. Walled Lake Northern Wallops Lakeland 51-6

Walled Lake Northern spoils Lakeland's homecoming, wins the battle of Bogie Lake.

Walled Lake Northern walloped Lakeland 51-6 on Homecoming to win the battle of Bogie Lake Road. The Knights scored early in the first half after an interception before a large homecoming crowd. The Eagles had trouble moving the ball in the first quarter, and Walled Lake Northern scored their first touchdown with 6:47 to go. The Eagles blocked the extra point giving the Knights a 6-0 lead. After holding the Eagles to a three-and-out the Knights kicked a 35-yard field goal to take 9-0 at the end of the first quarter. Walled Lake Northern broke the game open in the second quarter as they scored 21 unanswered points. Lakeland High School's game against Walled Lake Northern is up for Game of the Week on MLive. Lakeland football player Dalton Christie is up for Player of the Week on MI Prep Zone, vote in both polls now.

Lakeland sits in second place behind the Plymouth vs. Canton game. You can also vote now for Lakeland football player Dalton Christie. He is up for Player of the Week on MI Prep Zone. Christie currently has the lead in this poll, but still needs more votes throughout the week to secure the win. Lakeland JV Blasts Royal Oak 48-14 During Pink Out Game

Lakeland is raising money for cancer by dressing in pink. Thursday, the JV football team took the field.

The Lakeland Junior Varsity football team blasted Royal Oak 48-14 Thursday night at the Pink Out game. Quarterback Zachary Humphrey tossed a touchdown pass to Nicholas Schaible to open the scoring at the 6:05 mark of the 1st period. After the swarming Eagle defense stopped Royal Oak on their first drive, Ryan Wonders scored on a 21-yard scamper to give Lakeland at 14-0 lead. The Eagles never looked back as they stopped the Ravens on a 4th and goal at the 2-yard line midway through the second quarter. Sophomore running back Michael Kutzleb scored on a 38-yard sweep with just 38 seconds in the half. In the second half, the Eagles broke the game open on a back to back touchdown runs by Andrew Bovay. Lakeland Thumps Waterford Kettering 48-33

The Lakeland Eagles continue to work hard, get a road win in Waterford.

The Lakeland Eagles thumped Waterford Kettering 48-33 Friday night. In a game that seemed like it was basketball on grass, both teams combined for 11 touchdowns. The Eagles scored first on a 25-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ross Heiman to Dalton Christie with just 48 seconds to go in 1st quarter for a 6-0 lead. Anthony Waite scored on a 11-yard screen pass from Heiman with 2:26 left in the half to up the lead to 14-7. After a fumble recovery by Lakeland’s Michael Sullivan with just over a minute in the 1st half, Heiman tossed his third touchdown pass to tight end Brad Govan from 32 yards out. Kicker John Victor converted on the extra point to give the Eagles a 21-7 lead at halftime. The Eagles fumbled on the first play of the third …

MHSAA Institutes New Rules for High School Football Beginning in 2012

Football teams across Michigan, including those from Lakeland and Milford, began practice last week while getting used to several new rules from the MHSAA.

The 2012-13 fall sports season officially began this week, when approximately 110,000 student-athletes in Michigan begin practice in eight sports regulated by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). Practice began for Michgan's football players last Monday, followed by all other fall sports — from cross country to boys tennis — on Wednesday. Schools must have 12 days of preseason practice at all levels before their first game. For the Lakeland Eagles, the varsity team plays their first game of the season away Aug. 24 against Northville High School. The varsity team from Milford High School, meanwhile, plays Flushing High School on Aug. 24. Their first game is a home game. Before the first whistle, Huron Valley's student …
