The Huron Valley Schools Board of Education approved bids Wednesday, but also opened up discussions for alternative uses for the buildings. Any interested party has until Jan. 15 to make an offer for the buildings.
The Huron Valley Schools Board of Education approved bids for the demolition of both Highland Middle School and Baker Elementary Wednesday night, but also made a motion that would allow groups other than just Highland Township and the Village of Milford to make an offer to purchase or use the buildings. Board president Sean Carlson said that at the end of the day the board needed to protect the district from potentially harmful legislation that would force the district to put the buildings on a state list and give up local control of what happens to the buildings. While the legislation is stalled in committees - there is a real fear that something similar to the Right-to-Work situation could happen and the bills could be passed in a day …

The Huron Valley Schools Board of Education was expected to approve bids for the demolition of Highland Middle School and Baker Elementary Monday. However, that item has been rescheduled for a special meeting Wednesday.
Update, 2:30 p.m. The Huron Valley Schools Board of Education will no longer take up the razing of Highland Middle School and Baker Elementary School at Monday's meeting. In an email to White Lake-Highland Patch, Kim Root, the director of communications and community relations for the district, said, "There will be a special board meeting on Wednesday, December 12 at Milford High School, as the Board felt this item merited its own meeting." New Supervisor Rick Hamill said he wants to make Highland Middle School area a place where the community comes to gather, a place that gives Highland an identity.
In a 4-3 vote, the Highland Township Board of Trustees gave new Supervisor Rick Hamill the green light to move ahead with negotiations for the vacant Highland Middle School Building. The move was necessary after the Huron Valley Schools Board of Education gave the township until Dec. 4 to decide if they wanted to purchase the building. The deadline had previously been March 2013, but recent state legislation that could take away the local control districts have over their vacant buildings was introduced in early November prompting the district to speed up the deadline. The Huron Valley School Board approved a motion to start the bid process for the demolition of Highland Middle School and Baker Elementary School.
Highland Township and Milford Township have until Dec. 4 to decide if they would like to buy the Huron Valley School District's two vacant buildings because of new state legislation. The school board started the bid process for demolition of the buildings as a result Thursday. This legislation would require district to list vacant building on a statewide registry. Those buildings could then be offered, through the state, to charter schools, according to Kim Root, director of communitcation and community relations.
