Fire Chief Urges Caution When Using Turkey Fryers for Holiday Meals

White Lake Fire Chief Tony Maltese has a holiday message for area residents.

The following was submitted to White Lake Patch by the White Lake Fire Department. White Lake Township Fire Chief Tony Maltese and the Deputy State Fire Marshal are urging consumers to use extreme caution when preparing their holiday meals with a turkey fryer because of the dangers frequently associated with the devices. Tests have shown that fryers have a high risk of tipping over, overheating, or spilling hot oil, leading to fires, burns, or other injuries. The cooking method, which has become increasingly popular in recent years, requires placing the turkey in three gallons or more of oil, heated by propane. Some opt for frying, believing it delivers better taste and cuts down on cooking time; but the units have come under scrutiny as …

Gov. Snyder Proclaims October 7-13 as Fire Prevention Week

In 2011, 68 people in Michigan died in home fires and firefighters throughout the state responded to 15,578 home fires.

Gov. Rick Snyder has proclaimed October 7-13 Fire Prevention Week in Michigan to encourage individuals and families to develop and practice home fire escape plans, and to ensure homes are equipped with working smoke alarms or automatic fire sprinkler systems for additional preparedness. This year’s theme is “Have 2 Ways Out.” “Having a practiced home escape plan is critical because fire is unpredictable and moves fast. You may have only seconds to escape safely,” said state fire Marshal Richard Miller. “In less than three minutes, your home could be totally engulfed in flames, so every family member should know how to react quickly and calmly." In 2011, 68 people in Michigan died in home fires and fire departments throughout the state …

Fire Department Reminds Drivers to Slow Down in School Zones

For a second year, the White Lake Fire Department is parking trucks in school zones reminding drivers to slow down and watch for kids as the 2012-13 school year kicks off.

If you see flashing lights and fire trucks near your child's school, don't panic. It's all part of a program provided by the White Lake Fire Department that aims to remind drivers, as the school year starts, to slow down when driving in school zones. Firefighter Steve Hanneman started the program in 2011 after hearing about a similar program in Texas. "I took a training class with a fire chief from Texas who's department ran a similar program, I thought it sounded like a great idea so the department discussed it and we implemented it in 2011," Hanneman said. And the response has been positive. "We had great feedback the first year," Hanneman said. "We had several parents email us or call us to let us know how much they appreciated us being…
